From January until April 2025, Indonesian artist Citra Sasmita will transform The Curve for her first solo exhibition in the UK: a new commission titled Into Eternal Land. Working fluidly across painting, sculptural installation, embroidery and scent, Sasmita will invite visitors on a symbolic, multi-sensory journey through the 90-metre-long gallery to explore ideas of ancestral memory, ritual and migration.

SUN.CONTEMPORARY and SHELTER launched the Sungai Watch Charity Exhibition on 23 February 2025. This fundraiser unites 21 Balinese and international artists in a creative dialogue on sustainability. The exhibition also features a Sungai Watch installation illustrating environmental conservation and collective action. In Balance and Harmony, Kadek Armika reimagines the Balinese kite—not as a mere object of leisure, but as a vessel of memory, movement, and meaning. Drawing upon the historical and technical dimensions of traditional kite-making, Armika offers a deeply layered exploration of cultural identity, aerodynamics, and sculptural form. This exhibition is presented by Italy's Artevento and Bali's Nonfrasa Gallery.

In celebration of Earth Day, Bumi Kinar presents MENAPAK - a photography exhibition by young Balinese photographer Ade Ardhana. Through his lens, Ade invites us to reflect on the traces we leave upon the natural world, a visual journey that explores how small, seemingly simple things can transform the way we honor the planet. MENAPAK (Tracing the Earth) invites us to feel how tiny objects can shift our perspective, revealing the quiet yet powerful connections between humans, nature, and one another.

This unique dining experience celebrates the wild, fresh, and locally sourced ingredients found right in Bali, with ingredients hand-picked by the Dome team with help from Balinese forager and nomadic cook, Dewa Ayu Made. Foraging – a tradition that dates back to prehistoric times – is the practice of searching for and gathering wild food, including edible plants, fruits, nuts, seeds, and fungi. Ethical foraging practices emphasise the importance of not overharvesting, taking only what is needed so that plant populations can regenerate.

The 1950s in Indonesia served as the backdrop for Turang, a beautiful film that holds a significant place as an early example of cinema engaging with the legacy of colonialism. This landmark film emerged from the vision of Bachtiar Siagian, a leftist director, writer, and thinker deeply committed to fighting against imperialist and colonial cultural narratives through his art. Unfortunately, the subsequent anti-communist violence during the New Order authoritarian regime resulted in the tragic loss of many of his important cinematic works.

Entering its second semester, the Program Membaca Denpasar dari Dekat Sekali program partners with the Sanur Archive for its seventh event, Menatap Nyiur Sanur. This exploration will delve into Sanur's history, revealing a narrative beyond its peaceful facade of palms and beaches. This investigation will utilize the digital platform of the Colonial Collections Datahub, employing its various features to conduct digital intervention practices. This discussion forms part of Made Naraya's research, which examines the potential of digital platforms to serve as a third space for decolonising the narratives surrounding cultural heritage objects originating from colonial contexts.

TROPIS NUSANTARA, a group exhibition presented by Ruang Fungsi, a newly established multi-purpose creative space in Seminyak, features the works of ten talented Bali-based artists: Amadea, Bunnybone, Eka Sudarma Putra, Gusti Ayu Dwi Sudarwa, Kuncir Sathya Viku, Lee Wilson, Nugi Ketut, Satria Nugraha, Tiarama, and Wicitra Pradnyaratih.

Mekare-kare, also known as Mageret Pandan, is a distinctive Balinese ritual tradition unique to the village of Tenganan. Central to this practice is a ceremonial combat where young men engage in duels, wielding clubs fashioned from thorny pandan leaves and defending with rattan shields. This intricate ritual serves as an homage to Indra, the revered Hindu god of war.

Tumpek Kandang is a day set aside for the distinct honouring of domestic animals. Across Bali, as Balinese Hindus observe this significant day – a ceremony dedicated to Bhatara Rare Angon, revered as the master of all cattle and livestock – household creatures will receive special recognition. These rituals are traditionally conducted at every farm and within family compounds. The very name, Tumpek Kandang, finds its origins in two Balinese words: "Tumpek," signifying a peak or culmination, and "Kandang," which denotes an enclosure or cage.

This workshop will explore hand-building, layering, sgraffito, and watercolour-style underglaze techniques to create personalised expressions of nature and memories through functional and sculptural porcelain vessels. Participants will have the opportunity to explore two distinctive areas of ceramics. Firstly, they will learn the process of creating a canvas on hand-built and wheel-thrown bases using fresh porcelain clay. Secondly, students will use commercial watercolour-style underglazes to create perspective and depth on bisque-fired surfaces and imitate traditional China paint effects.

Jia CURATED will return to Bali Festival Park from 14 to 18 August 2025. This year’s event will feature an expanded space, twice the size of previous editions, extended days, and will introduce new programmes spotlighting evolving trends in craft, design, and culture.

Marking the culmination of the significant six Tumpek cycle, Tumpek Wayang holds a particularly sacred status amongst these observances. This day is especially dedicated to Wayang Kulit – the intricate shadow puppets of Bali – with the island's puppeteers using Tumpek Wayang as an occasion to honour Lord Iswara. Tradition dictates that should a child be born during Wayang week, the Balinese Wuku week in which Tumpek Wayang falls, a specific protective ritual, known as Nyapuh Leger, must be performed. This ceremony involves a special sacred puppet performance called Sapuh Leger, followed by the collection of holy water obtained by washing the puppet's base handle. It is also believed by some that the atmosphere during this week can be sensitive, leading them to exercise caution and refrain from undertaking long journeys.

Witness the vibrant cultural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago at the Indonesian Pavilion through a variety of traditional dances. Performances include the Oleg Tambulilingan Dance and Joged Dance, both originating from Bali. These performances are scheduled for 17 and 18 August, coinciding with Indonesia's 80th anniversary.
